Meet Paul MacGillivray, QA Manager

09/07/2019

How did you start at London Studio?

I saw a job posting for a QA Lead role which I was looking for at the time. I was interested in working for a first party Sony studio and I loved the idea of working on VR games. This was at a time when the PSVR was still going under the code name Morpheus and not much was known about the hardware or the games coming out. I was really intrigued by the prospect of VR and the challenge of working on new types of experiences so I applied right away. I was so happy to get the job and I’ve learnt so much. The team here are really great to work with!

What does your role entail?

I manage the QA team for our VR projects. This means setting up all of the QA processes and planning how we will test each game. I manage an amazing internal team of QA testers and also work closely with our external test team in Liverpool who are also fantastic. I get to spend a lot of time speaking to other members of the team and reminding them that they have bugs to fix. :p

What do you find most exciting about your work here?

Making VR games is really interesting. I feel that here at London Studio we are at the forefront of VR development and that we get to pioneer new types of experiences. It’s really great to be a part of it!

I also really like the level of freedom and responsibility I’m given to do my job. I’ve also had the chance to meet and work with many other teams within the Sony worldwide studios organisation.

I’ve even been lucky enough to meet Hideo Kojima and I love him <3

What had your career path looked like over the years?

Prior to working here I have spent a lot of time working in QA Tester roles at many different studios such as Realtime Worlds and Guerrilla Games. I worked my way up to senior and then to lead when I joined here. I was given the responsibility of defining how QA would be run on Blood and Truth. This responsibility has helped me learn and develop myself further and the studio has really helped support my personal growth. We have a lot of training courses available and it’s great to see our achievements recognised!

What is it like to work in the heart of central London?

It’s very cool. There’s so much to do around the office. Lots of great pubs and places to eat.

If you could describe London Studio in a few words, what would they be?

Friendly, innovative and supportive.
